Countdown to the Avengers: 7 days

In just 7 days I will be mere hours from my nerdiest dream ever. The big screen adaption of one of my favorite Super Hero teams, the Avengers. Marvel has been building to this film since the scene tagged at the end of the credits of Iron Man. Here are some of my expectations and my disappointments.

First up, as a comic reader I am sad that we don't have a full cast of Avengers. I mean sure the staples like Iron Man and Captain America are there, but the coolest part about the Avengers comics is that you get to see more obscure characters alongside the heavy hitters. Where is my Luke Cage? Or my Doctor Strange? Not to mention the absence of two of Marvel's biggest characters, Wolverine and Spider-Man. While I understand that there are movie studio politics behind the inclusion of those last two, I was hoping for a more insane hero filled line up. We are even missing two of the original founding Avengers, Ant-Man and Wasp. But alas, maybe the sequels will shine some light on some of the more obscure, yet also awesome, characters.

From what I have seen from the trailers the movie will deliver on the premise of bringing all of these dysfunctional people together to stop the world from ending. It seems to be taking more from the pages of the Ultimates story lines with a dash of Loki and a lack of Nazi's. And its okay. The Ultimates line is about 80% awesome. The only thing I don't like about the Ultimates is how much of a dick the Ultimate universe's Captain America is. Luckily, it looks like the characterization of Captain America is focusing more of the mainstream Marvel universe version of the character.

I am glad this movie is happening, and being directed by one of my heroes, Joss Whedon. Whedon has a flawless record (knock on wood) when it comes to great writing. His run on Astonishing X-Men is also some of the best comic book writing out there, so to see him helm a comic book film is going to be quite the treat.

All in all, I cannot wait for May 4th.
