Torchlight Initial Thoughts

Torchlight, a game made by Runic Games, is a fantastic game I hope everyone gives at least a fair shake. It is Diablo 2, but better honestly. To be fair though, Diablo 2 is a 10 year old game, and Torchlight came out a scant  12 months ago in comparison. There are so many things that Torchlight does right, that I hope Diablo 3 will learn from.

First off, the pet system is a fantastic gameplay element, as it allows you to play without the burden of having to constantly go back to town to empty your inventory. The pet's inventory can hold as much as yours, effectively doubling your space in addition to being able to equip spells and rings. Add the ability to have your pet transform into a variety of support creatures for a short amount of time based on what fish you feed it, and you have a companion for life!

Another awesome thing about the gameplay? The Portal vendor. Wanna jump in for a quick spell and just trudge through a quick dungeon? Just go to the vendor, buy a dungeon portal for a dungeon around your level and POOF instant gratification dungeon slashing is go! This seriously makes this game, as with only 3 default character classes the gameplay tatters off pretty quickly.

While it might not have the depth of Diablo, Torchlight is a fantastic substitute that is a bit easier on the eyes with extra gameplay that is polished to a sheen until Diablo 3 comes out. Plus, since it is digital download, chances are if you are reading this, you can play it! So what are you waiting for? Download it and kick back for some old school dungeon crawling!
